The elves dwell within Du Weldenvarden, the dwarves rule their halls beneath the Beor Mountains, and the human kingdoms enjoy an era of stability unlike any before. Yet beneath the surface, darkness is beginning to grow. After the death of his dragon, a Rider named Galbatorix has become consumed by grief, anger, and resentment. As he seeks forbidden knowledge and secretly gathers followers, the first cracks begin to appear within the Rider Order. Most believe the peace will last forever. Few realize they stand at the beginning of the greatest betrayal in Alagaësian history. The story begins as rumors of unrest quietly spread among the Dragon Riders.
