The film shows the Count's past:
His real name is Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia (the prototype of the historical prince Vlad III).
In the 15th century, he was a noble and brave warrior who fought for Christianity against the Turks.
But when he returned from the war, he learned that his beloved wife Elizabeth had committed suicide, thinking that he was dead.
The church refused to bury her, calling her soul cursed. In rage and despair, Vlad denied God, desecrated the church and pierced the cross with his sword. Because of this curse, he became an immortal creature - a vampire who drinks blood.
Centuries later, he meets Mina (the embodiment of Elizabeth's reborn soul) and seeks to possess her, hoping to regain his lost love
