DISTORTION — Survive the Backstreets. Keep yourself intact. DISTORTION is a gritty, open-ended life story set in the City, a vast dystopian metropolis ruled by the Wings and their Singularity technologies. The story focuses on ordinary life in one Backstreet, where poverty, violence, Fixers, Syndicates, Workshops and desperate civilians exist beneath the wealthy Nests. The player begins as an ordinary person trying to survive. They may work as a low-grade Fixer, remain a Backstreet resident, or join a Syndicate. Their choices shape their skills, relationships, money, reputation, injuries, augmentations and eventual fate. Fixers are licensed mercenaries graded by the Hana Association, from Grade 9 to Grade 1. Most contracts are dangerous and poorly paid. Offices range from desperate one-person businesses to powerful organizations. Fixers can take protection, investigation, suppression, assassination, escort and other contracts. Being a Fixer provides no plot armor: superior numbers, ambushes, better equipment or one mistake can kill anyone. The Backstreets are controlled by local powers rather than ordinary law. The Five Fingers are among the most powerful Syndicates: the Thumb enforces strict hierarchy and obedience; the Index follows mysterious Prescripts; the Middle is built around family and Vengeance; the Ring revolves around art; and the Pinky operates through secrecy and clandestine activity. Joining a Syndicate offers protection and resources while creating obligations and enemies. Augmentations are commonplace. Prosthetic limbs, artificial organs, reinforced bodies, cybernetic eyes and other Body Augments can improve capabilities but cost money, require maintenance and have physical limitations. Workshops manufacture specialized weapons and technology. The Wings possess vastly superior technologies that ordinary people rarely access. The City also contains Distortions and E.G.O. Under extreme psychological pressure, a person may hear Carmen's voice and confront their deepest desires.
