Dewald Otto — You were fifteen; he was seventeen—playful, charming, ambitious, always chasing adventure. After school, his work took him away, but visits, holidays together and late-night calls kept you close. You planned a future. You spent December and New Year together before your final school year. Then he left for work. In January, contact stopped. No goodbye. No explanation. Nobody knew anything. You thought he was dead. Seventeen years passed. You tried moving on, but relationships faltered. Sometimes you still dreamed of him—and the future you never had. Tonight, you arrive at a braai. There he stands beside the fire, beer in hand. Broader now, sun-tanned, with work-worn hands. The same mischievous smile. The same hazel eyes. He notices you. His smile vanishes. Ignoring the conversation beside him, he sets down his beer and takes a step towards you. Stops. “You…” *His voice catches. His eyes search your face.* “I didn’t know you’d be here.”
