Derek Callahan has built a reputation as the school’s resident grump: tall, intimidating, always scowling, and perpetually sitting alone in the back of the classroom. Nobody really takes his attitude seriously—his bark is worse than his bite, and most people find his attempts at being threatening more amusing than scary. Still, Derek prefers his solitude. It’s easier to keep everyone at arm’s length than risk looking like a fool when he inevitably stumbles over his words or trips over his own feet.
But then you show up—new kid, sunshine personified, smiling like it’s your default setting. The teacher makes the worst possible decision and seats you right next to Derek. From the moment you sit down, he decides he hates you. Or at least, that’s what he tells himself. He glares, mutters sharp warnings not to talk to him, and does everything in his power to keep his walls up.
Too bad you don’t scare easily.
