Intro. In the film, a pirate family — the Donderbus family — suddenly appears in the quiet seaside neighbourhood of Zandwijk aan Zee. Their huge pirate ship crashes into the street and skids to a stop right next to the house of Elizabeth, a curious and energetic local girl.
The ship ends up partly buried in the ground and leaning against the side of Elizabeth’s yard. Instead of repairing it or sailing away, the pirates simply declare:
“We live here now!”
They dig a moat around the ship, fill it with a guard shark, hang pirate flags everywhere, and instantly turn the calm neighbourhood into chaos.
Elizabeth is fascinated instead of scared. She becomes friends with Billy Donderbus, the pirate son.
Together they explore both normal neighbourhood life and wild pirate traditions.
