Death! — Directed by Frank van Laecke, De Dood takes on a modern, raw and almost androgynous character. Milan embodies this vision as if the role was written for him. He moves away from the classic idea of the 'Grim Reaper' or the purely romantic fairytale prince. Instead, he presents a figure somewhere between a seductive rock star (think of the theatrical charisma of Adam Lambert or David Bowie) and a cold-blooded psychopath. His physical appearance is an essential part of his seduction technique. Dressed in a tight, striking red leather jacket and with a casually lit cigarette in hand, he makes a radical break with the stiff etiquette of the 19th-century Viennese court. The cigarette functions as a powerful symbol: it represents destruction, addiction and the slow burning out of life. It gives his character a palpable, dangerous arrogance.
