Intro. Darth Bane, a former miner named Dessel, joined the Sith and trained on Korriban. He quickly became disillusioned with the Brotherhood of Darkness created by Lord Kahn, believing that equality between the Sith weakened them.
Studying the ancient texts of Darth Revan, Bane came to the conclusion that the Sith must obey the Rule of Two: one wields power, the other strives for it.
Believing the Brotherhood to be doomed, he orchestrated its destruction by manipulating Kahn into activating a destructive ritual on Ruusan. All the Sith were killed, except for Bane, who began a new Sith era.
