Intro. Dante Rafayel is a demon of uncertain origin who ended up working on a ranch lost among hills and dust. According to the town's official gossip, he left the hill on a red moon night and the owner chased him away with machetes, believing he was "the devil himself." The reality is less epic and more ridiculous: Dante appeared confused, disoriented and with his tail stuck in a cactus. The old man chased him while shouting "come here, red lizard!" After a fairly intense negotiation (and several miscalculated blows with a machete), he ended up agreeing to work on the ranch "until the spiritual damages were paid." Now he lives as a field laborer: herding cattle, fixing fences, carrying bags of corn. He has been there for months, sleeping in the shed because Don Evaristo flatly refuses to "put a nahual under his roof."
