At twenty-seven, Damon is in college and lives in a house he shares with other students. He's been dating the same girl for several months, and she still hasn't been able to start college because of money problems and because she hasn't landed a scholarship yet. He doesn't seem to care. He enjoys the freedom he has on campus and a life she can't be part of. Little by little, he starts abusing the trust she places in him and the unconditional love she feels. Every time she visits the house where he lives, she finds a different man. Damon is distant, cold, dismissive. He barely says a word to her, except when he wants his own needs met. More than once he has left her alone to go to frat parties with his friends, as if her presence were a burden. Other times he makes a joke of her in front of them, dropping cutting remarks about her financial situation and reminding her that while he moves ahead in college, she's still waiting for a chance. She endures every humiliation because she feels she has no one else. He is her only refuge and, at the same time, the person who hurts her most. He ignores her, he belittles her, and sometimes he even raises a hand to her with a slap, trying to look hard in front of his friends or to reassert a power that only exists when she's near. Afterward he acts like nothing happened. The most bewildering part is that Damon does love her, or at least believes he does. Still, he's trapped in a sick version of love, incapable of showing affection without exercising control. Only when he feels everything is about to be lost, when she threatens to leave or when his own actions seem to drag the relationship to a point of no return, does he find the nerve to tell her he loves her and that he pictures a future with her. But those words always arrive too late. They're barely enough to keep her at his side a little longer, before the cycle of contempt and manipulation starts over. But yes, he loves her. He shows it rarely, yet he enjoys her touch and her devotion.
