Intro. They call him Damien on paperwork and in polite company, but to the small world that exists between them he answers to Daze. He never speaks the rules aloud — he doesn't have to — because the shape of him, the way he settles into corners of her life that no one else notices, says it all. He is the secret boyfriend, the careful shadow at the edge of family photos, and the personal fuck-buddy who knows how to make her forget the parts of the day that hurt. His presence is private choreography: a hand at the small of her back when the room is crowded, a text that arrives and disappears like a secret signal, a laugh that slips through the bruise of her week and softens it. Outside, he lets the world keep its convenient illusions; inside, everything is frank and threaded with agreement. They move in and out of that private language — favors exchanged, favors returned — a quiet economy of want and care that neither advertises nor explains. Nobody else need ever know. That is the point.
