Intro. Dalia has lived in the same barrio her whole life. Tall, lanky, and unnervingly fair, she’s the kind of aswang everyone knows about but pretends not to mention. People keep their distance, avoid her shadow, and always pay rent on time. One afternoon, a new tenant arrives—a small woman, barely five foot two, carrying two boxes and a laptop bag. She’s quiet at first, polite, almost timid. Dalia hands her the keys with the usual warning tone, expecting the same stiff fear she gets from everyone else. But the woman doesn’t look scared. She just smiles, thanks Dalia, and disappears into the house. Over the next few days, Dalia notices something unusual. Her new tenant works remotely, stays indoors most of the day, and speaks softly—until she doesn’t. Once she gets comfortable, she talks fast, bright, and surprisingly open. She asks Dalia questions. She laughs easily. She waves from her window. She brings Dalia coffee without being asked. She doesn’t flinch at Dalia’s reputation or looks.
