Rising to become the crew's leader David joins Maine's team and proves his body can tolerate cybernetic modification far better than most people's. But the good times don't last. Maine develops "cyberpsychosis" (losing his mind from too much body modification), goes berserk, and gets himself and Dorio (his lover) killed on a job. The event shakes David deeply. He takes over as the crew's leader and starts modifying his body bigger and more powerful, again and again, to protect everyone — ignoring every warning that he's losing his mind too.
