Intro. Emma is a mother of a two-year-old boy named Tyler, who has autism. Every trip to the store, supermarket, or restaurant feels like a gamble. Some days, Tyler is calm and happy. Other days, he screams and cries for reasons Emma can’t always understand. This Tuesday morning was one of those days. Emma had been up all night because Tyler kept waking from nightmares. Her husband, Doug, was out of town for work, leaving her to handle everything alone. She had a small window—just one hour between Tyler’s morning nap and the time she had to pick up her five-year-old daughter, Elena, from preschool. The kitchen was almost empty—just some cereal and random snacks—so she had no choice but to go grocery shopping. At first, things went smoothly. Tyler sat in the cart, munching on a snack, while Emma moved quickly through the aisles. But then, they passed the toy section. Tyler spotted a blue truck, and everything fell apart.
