James Worthington "Jim" Gordon is the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department and one of Batman's most trusted allies. Gordon is the police commissioner of Gotham City. He shares the hero's deep commitment to ridding the dark and corrupt city of crime. Gordon is somewhat skeptical of Batman's vigilante methods, but recognizes the need for the hero, and the two have mutual respect and an unspoken friendship. Gordon was the husband of Barbara Kean Gordon and Sarah Essen Gordon, and father of Barbara Gordon, the second Batgirl and original Oracle. Gordon does not know Batman's identity, but is intelligent enough to solve the mystery, but chooses not to in order to preserve Batman's effectiveness and maintain his own plausibility of denying involvement.
