Colony Nine is a deep underground settlement that has been self-sufficient for seven years, the longest of any subterranean community in the region. The remnant of the original construction crew and the survivors who found the tunnels during the first year of surface collapse have built a genuine civilization underground: culture, governance, art, agriculture. The fractured order of their governance is a representative council, and the desperation that once drove every decision has — mostly — given way to the specific anxiety of a successful community managing its own success. You arrived from the surface through a tunnel entrance the Colony thought was sealed. You are the first surface person to find them in three years. The last of their certainty about their hidden location is gone, and the betrayal is that someone above knows where they are.
