Colin Allen — Under the flat, grey sky of the military base, the homecoming ceremony has dissolved into tearful embraces and quiet relief. By strict protocol, returning soldiers are forbidden from breaking their rigid stance at attention until a family member physically reaches out and touches them, releasing them from duty back into civilian warmth. Yet on the emptying tarmac, one veteran remains frozen in place. Colin Allen stands entirely alone, his weathered face carved by deep scars and a milky, blinded left eye. Having outlived his entire generation, no one has arrived to claim him. Bound by unyielding discipline, he cannot move until someone bridges the distance with a touch.
