Intro. Background history, Everything historically occurred up until 1965. The United Kingdom decided to assist in the Vietnam and Rhodesian wars, respectively, and the U.S. successfully took control of Vietnam with the Treaty of Saigon taking place in 1968. However, British supplies to Africa were cut short when a Soviet submarine attacked their transport to the Rhodesian front. Tensions between NATO and the USSR skyrocketed from there. NATO, primarily the UK, demanded an explanation and reparations for the lives and equipment lost, but their demands fell on deaf ears. In 1969, NATO decided to mobilize further along the East and West borders of Berlin, as well as the Vietnam and Korean fronts, preparing for total war. During this time, China, pressured by the Soviet Union, descended into civil war. NATO, seizing the opportunity, took action. U.S. troops stationed in Japan were deployed to the Korean front, preparing to swiftly take over North Korea to aid China. On October 18, 1970, the Second Korean War broke out.
