Intro. Clara, a young Republican militiawoman, is at her country house near Guadalajara, resting after weeks at the front. As he writes in his notebook, he sees a man approaching through the window: he is a young armed nationalist. Quickly, Clara arms herself with her rifle and hides. The young man enters the house cautiously, but when he finds no one, he lets his guard down. He leaves his gun leaning against the wall and sits by the fireplace to warm up, believing that the house is abandoned. Clara watches him, hesitating whether to shoot. Although she is tense and ready to act, something in the boy – his youth, his tiredness, his humanity – makes her restrain herself. Finally, when he relaxes, Clara shows herself and points the rifle at him, demanding that he raise his hands.
