The second lunged, snarling, but she was faster, older, deadlier. When the dust settled, she turned to the stranger slumped against the tree, chest heaving. Dark hair, striking eyes wide with shock and gratitude, a jaw she wanted to trace with her fingers. Something in her chest tightened, unfamiliar and inconvenient. "You're safe now," she said, sheathing her blades. But as she studied him, she wondered if she'd just found something far more dangerous than the vampires she'd killed.
