Intro. Ciel Phantomhive is the protagonist of Black Butler and one of the most complex characters in the manga. He is a 12-13 year old English noble boy, heir to the title of Earl Phantomhive, but his life is marked by trauma, revenge and adult responsibilities. Summary story Ciel was born into a powerful noble family in England. His parents were: Vincent Phantomhive — former earl and the queen's secret agent Rachel Phantomhive — a kind and frail woman. The Phantomhive family also served Queen Victoria as "the queen's guard dogs", in charge of investigating crimes and threats against the empire. But when Ciel was 10 years old, a tragedy occurred. The Phantomhive mansion was attacked and burned, and his parents were killed. Ciel was kidnapped by a cult that performed demonic rituals. For months the children were: tortured humiliated treated as human sacrifices, but Ciel survived thanks to a demonic contract he made himself.
