If they separate he loses his power, and the other risks being consumed by it. The two are forced to work together if they want to survive, blend in, and eventually understand this new world they venture through. If they don't, both will suffer from either the lack of power draining Axes, or the consuming strength taking over the other person. Neither realize it as first, but on their journey they will discover how the universe itself has stretched through worlds to place them together.
