Caïus Volturi — Caïus comes from ancient Greece. After becoming a vampire, he meets Athénodora, who becomes his mate, and eventually he allies himself with Aro and Marcus. The three of them form the core of what will become the Volturi. From the very beginning their roles complement one another: Aro is the strategist and the manipulator, Marcus understands the bonds between individuals, while Caïus stands for harshness, fear, and punishment. In that era the vampire world is dominated by very ancient clans, the Romanians above all. The Volturi enter into a long struggle to bring down that old power. They do not win through strength alone: they search out vampires with rare gifts, recruit them into their guard, and slowly build an army almost impossible to face. When they defeat the Romanians, they do not simply swap one clan for another: they install a genuine world order. From Volterra, the Volturi become the supreme authority of the vampire world. They impose laws on every clan, chief among them the one forbidding anyone to reveal the existence of vampires to humans. Officially, they protect their own kind. In reality, that law hands them enormous power: they can watch, judge, and destroy any clan at all by claiming it represents a danger. Their influence is nearly absolute. Their guard gathers some of the most powerful vampires in the world, capable of neutralizing an enemy before a fight even starts. Very few clans dare to resist them, because the Volturi are not merely strong: they are ancient, wealthy, organized, well informed, and surrounded by vampires with extraordinary abilities. They know what is happening everywhere, and they can present themselves as judges while acting more often as conquerors. Caïus plays an essential role in this system. He has no particular supernatural gift, but he makes up for it with extreme violence and an obsession with authority. He wants every law enforced without mercy. Where Aro will sometimes try to manipulate or to recruit, Caïus prefers to condemn and to eliminate. He is therefore one of the most terrifying faces of Volturi power: the one who reminds everyone that behind their elegance and their apparent civility, they govern above all through fear. Caïus looks very young, almost unreal. He is tall and slender, his figure elegant rather than truly imposing. His skin is extremely pale, his features are fine and almost aristocratic, and his long, very light blond hair sharpens the cold, ancient, spectral side of him. His red eyes are a reminder that he feeds on human blood, but what marks him most is his gaze: hard, contemptuous, constantly tense, as though he were hunting for a reason to condemn someone. He wears dark clothing, often black and red, with long draping fabrics, coats, and highly noble attire. His style gives the impression of an ancient prince or a royal judge. At first glance he does not look like a brutal warrior: his body seems almost fragile. And yet that delicate appearance stands in contrast with his violence. His face usually stays closed, his lips pressed together, his movements strictly controlled, right up to the moment his fury breaks loose. Physically, then, he embodies a kind of cold and unsettling beauty: pale, blond, elegant, young in appearance, yet with a presence that is domineering and cruel. He has no need to be massive in order to frighten anyone, because his bearing and his rank are enough to show that he holds immense power. Caïus is far from being nothing but a violent, hot-tempered man. After nearly three thousand years of existence, he possesses an immense intelligence built by centuries of wars, plots, and power struggles. He took part in the creation of a regime that governs practically the whole vampire world, so he knows how to observe the clans, recognize a threat, anticipate a rebellion, and understand how power is kept. His intelligence is less charming than Aro's, but it is intensely political, strategic, and realistic. He knows that ruling takes more than being strong: you have to impose laws, build a terrifying reputation, and make everyone believe that every punishment is necessary to maintain order. His anger is part of that power. It is real, intense, at times almost uncontrollable, but it also works as a weapon. When he loses his temper, he reminds every onlooker that the Volturi can decide the life or the death of any vampire at all. Caïus is not trying to be loved: he wants to be feared. Where Aro smiles, manipulates, and tries to charm, Caïus intimidates directly. He is the visible threat, the punishment, the violence the regime can unleash at any moment. But behind that anger there is also a deep distrust. Caïus has survived so long because he almost never underestimates danger. Any new power, any independent clan, any creature he does not control can, to his mind, become a future threat. So he prefers to wipe out a risk before it grows genuinely powerful. It can look like paranoia, but that paranoia also comes out of his experience: he has watched empires disappear and once-weak enemies turn dangerous. His problem is how easily he turns caution into obsession and fear into extermination. He is also extremely proud. Unlike Aro or Marcus, he has no exceptional supernatural gift. His authority therefore rests on his age, his intelligence, his status, and the power of the Volturi. He has built himself an identity as sovereign and judge. Any disobedience looks to him like a political threat and a personal humiliation at the same time. He needs his rank acknowledged, because his power has become an essential part of what he is. Even so, Caïus knows how to control his impulses when the situation demands it. A man who was only uncontrollable would never have kept his place beside Aro for millennia. He understands when he has to wait, accept a collective decision, or conceal his true intentions. His brutality is not blind, then: it is usually organized and covered over by the law. He looks for an accusation, a fault, or a pretext that will allow the Volturi to attack while officially remaining the protectors of the vampire world. At bottom, Caïus is a blend of great intelligence, survival instinct, pride, fear, and anger. He can think in the very long term, but his absolute need for control sometimes warps his judgment. He confuses security with obedience, justice with vengeance, and stability with the destruction of anything that escapes him. That is what makes him complex: he is no simple brute but an ancient sovereign, clear-eyed and dangerous, whose intelligence serves a system founded on fear. In New Moon, Caïus appears in Volterra when Bella and Edward are brought before the three leaders of the Volturi. He stays seated at the side of Aro and Marcus, outwardly very calm, but his manner is cold and hostile from the first moment. When he understands that Bella is human and that she knows vampires exist, he wants the law applied without the slightest hesitation: to him she has to die, because she is a risk to their secret. Unlike Aro, who is fascinated by Bella and tries to understand her abilities, Caïus shows no curiosity and no compassion. He would rather eliminate the threat outright. In the end he agrees to let her go only because Alice states that Bella will become a vampire. That scene shows his character perfectly: distrustful, rigid, domineering, and always in favor of the most violent solution.
