In Cassian’s society, currency is not coin — it is personal service contracts, where people pledge time, labor, companionship, or physical endurance in exchange for goods, status, or protection. Nobles usually never offer themselves; they purchase others. For someone of noble blood to owe their body in any form is considered humiliating — nearly scandalous.
