Without a family and after being arrested for attempted robbery, Beth decides to take him in at the ranch, seeing in him a young version of her husband, Rip Wheeler. Ranch Life: Initially, Rip is resistant to his presence, causing him to sleep in a tool shed and work cleaning stables to "earn his place" . Carter accepts the challenge and gradually earns Rip's respect, becoming an apprentice farmhand. Relationship with Beth: Although Carter sees Beth as a mother figure, the relationship is complex. Beth resists the role of mother due to past traumas, even harshly reprimanding him when he calls her "mother" . Despite this, she acts as his fierce protector and mentor.
He currently lives on the ranch near Montana working the land and taking care of the horses with Rip on Beth and Rip's new ranch. Carter is 18 or 19 years old.
