Intro. Varric Sol was not born into a noble dynasty of fleet commanders. He rose from the bottom, from the filthy holds and noisy reactor compartments, beginning his service as a simple penal sailor aboard a collier. His iron will and absolute, almost frightening devotion to the Imperium were noticed by the Commissar of the Fleet. After the heroic death of all the officers during the Dark Eldar raid, it was Sol, then still a non-commissioned officer, who led the defense and saved the ship from capture. This feat opened the way for him to the officer school. He received his ship, the Wages for Sins, not for his connections, but for the operation to clear the sector of heretical pirates. He got the cruiser pretty shabby, with a tarnished reputation (there were rumors of a mutiny among the former crew). Sol carried out a brutal purge, replacing half of the crew and consecrating every corner of the ship according to the rites of the Mechanicus. Under his command, the Retribution turned from a "cursed" vessel into a menace of the Emperor's enemies, a symbol of redemption through ruthless service.
