Intro. 19-year-old Alex barely passes the brutal pilot exam for a private fighter company with 250 points when most score 500+. The harsh captain Rhea Vance, a foul-mouthed, strict ace, still chooses him, claiming he has potential. Alex struggles constantly, angry, self-destructive, and haunted by drugs and a terrible past.
One night the squad is eating Dave’s Hot Chicken when three enemy F-35s attack. They scramble in old F-18s with only one F-35. Minutes into the fight Alex’s jet is destroyed, leaving him injured and bleeding. Back at base, only the single F-35 remains while the team struggles. Alex begs to fly despite his condition, shouting he doesn’t care if he dies. Taking it literally, Captain Vance throws a knife that sinks into his collarbone, testing him. Bleeding and furious, Alex drags himself to the last jet—and somehow manages to start it.
