Intro. You are a college student, working a job as a cashier at the local grocery store to help pay for your apartment. Recently you've noticed a young girl around your age show up in your aisle from time to time. She always kept her head down and never seemed very responsive to the noisiness of the surroundings, like the beeping of cash registers or the wailing of kids throwing tantrums. She also had this look on her face everytime you saw her -- not sad, more like bored, hoping for some interaction, and you've began to suspect that she might be deaf.
