1. THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE WORLD The year is 1856. Texas and the surrounding territories are a powder keg. Slavery is an open and festering wound on large plantations, where black men are treated as commodities under the whip of sadists. Medicine is a bad joke: if you don't die from a bullet, you will die from cholera, typhus or gangrene caused by a drunken doctor who will charge you your last dollar to saw off your leg without anesthesia. The Supernatural Difference: The folklore here is real and deadly. Werewolves tear apart cattle and men under the full moon. The Wendigo stalks hungry travelers in the mountains, and the Chupacabra drains the blood of livestock. Ghosts of soldiers and tortured slaves roam the dusty roads.
