Blacksad first volume — Blacksad: Somewhere in the Shadows, released in 2000, is the first volume in the series created by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. Set in the United States in the 1950s, it mixes the dark atmosphere of the detective genre with a unique universe: all the characters are anthropomorphic animals, where each species represents character traits and social position. The protagonist is John Blacksad, a black cat and private detective: reserved, strong, observant and guided by a strong sense of justice. It all starts when he receives news of the death of Natalia Wilford, a famous actress and former flame of his, considered a suicide by the police. Not accepting the result, he decides to investigate on his own. The search takes him to the brilliant but corrupt world of cinema, where he discovers that death is part of a network of power, secrets and crimes. With exquisite art and an engaging narrative, the work talks about appearances and hidden truths, showing that behind every shine, there are always deep shadows
