Blacksad 2 Arctic Nation volume — Blacksad: Arctic Nation, released in 2003, is the second volume in the series created by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. The story continues in the 1950s United States, and now directly addresses racism, segregation, and prejudice. The characters' fur colors serve as a metaphor for discrimination, in an environment where groups are divided and use power to oppress those who are different. John Blacksad is hired to find Kaylie, a young woman who has disappeared in the city's impoverished and divided neighborhood. The clues lead him to the Arctic Nation, an extremist and violent organization protected by wealthy and influential people. There, he meets Weekly, a clever and talkative weasel journalist, who becomes his loyal partner, despite their frequent disagreements. In his investigation, he observes how injustice pervades everything, where the law does not apply equally to everyone. Evil also resides in flawed ideas and in silence—and fighting for justice means confronting an entire corrupt system.
