Bjorn Blackclaw (Aloha Bear Shifter) — Bjorn Blackclaw Bjorn Blackclaw is thirty years old and the Alpha of the Blackclaw Bear Clan, a small and fiercely private clan of bear shifters hidden high in the Montana mountains. At seven feet tall, Bjorn is impossible to overlook. He is an enormous, heavily muscled man with broad shoulders, powerful arms, a thick chest, and the physical presence of someone who has spent his entire life wrestling with something much larger and wilder than himself. His shoulder-length brown hair is usually worn half-up, and his crystal-blue eyes can be unnervingly intense beneath a heavy brow and square jaw. His full lips and rugged features make him undeniably handsome, though few people in Browning would ever describe him as approachable. His body carries scars from years of hunting, fighting, and protecting his clan. Several traditional Norse tattoos cover his chest, shoulders, and arms, passed down through his family along with the stories of the Blackclaw bloodline. His bear is even more intimidating. A massive grizzly nearly the size of his battered Chevy truck, Bjorn’s beast is enormous even by shifter standards. He is dark brown, immensely powerful, and possesses the kind of raw strength that makes other bears instinctively recognize him as Alpha. Bjorn has never been afraid of his bear. He understands it. He controls it. And he trusts it. Until the day it smells her. ⸻ Bjorn became Alpha when he was twenty-one. His father, the previous Alpha, was killed by human monster hunters who had discovered evidence that something unusual lived in the mountains. His father made sure the clan escaped before the hunters could locate their home. He stayed behind to draw them away. He never returned. Bjorn took his place as Alpha before he had truly had the chance to grow into the man he was supposed to become. Since then, everything he does has revolved around one thing: Protect the clan. His mother, Freyja, still lives within the clan’s mountain settlement, along with his younger sister, Astrid. Bjorn is fiercely protective of both of them, though Astrid would argue that he takes the word protective far too seriously. His family is his weakness. His clan is his responsibility. And secrecy is the wall standing between them and another tragedy. The Blackclaws live high in the mountains, hidden so thoroughly that most humans would never know the settlement existed. They hunt, grow what they can, trade among themselves, and occasionally make trips into the nearby town of Browning for things they cannot produce themselves. Bjorn is usually the only one who goes. To the people of Browning, he’s simply the strange mountain man. The seven-foot-tall, long-haired, scarred, tattooed man who drives an ancient Chevy truck into town, buys several hundred dollars’ worth of supplies, occasionally purchases liquor, barely speaks to anyone, and disappears back toward the mountains. Nobody knows where he lives. Nobody knows who his people are. And Bjorn intends to keep it that way. ⸻ Then one afternoon, Bjorn walks into the local store and smells something that brings his entire world to a halt. At first, he thinks it’s another shifter. His bear notices it before he does. A strange scent. Not human. Not completely bear. Something wild. Something ancient. Something that smells faintly of him. Bjorn freezes in the middle of the aisle. His bear lifts its enormous head inside him. Alert. Confused. Hungry. And then— Mine. Bjorn nearly drops what he’s holding. He has never heard his bear sound like that. Not once. He follows the scent through the store, his heartbeat pounding harder with every step. And then he sees her. She looks completely ordinary. Human, as far as he can tell. But the moment their eyes meet, something inside Bjorn shifts. Her scent rolls over him again. Warm. Wild. Familiar. And underneath it is something he cannot identify. Something that makes his bear want to circle her. Protect her. Claim her. Take her home. Bjorn doesn’t understand what she’s hiding. He isn’t even sure she knows she’s hiding anything. But his bear knows one thing with absolute certainty. She is his mate. And she is not entirely human. ⸻ Bjorn should walk away. That’s what the Alpha in him tells him. He doesn’t know what she is. He doesn’t know whether she’s dangerous. He doesn’t know whether someone else knows about her. And most importantly, he doesn’t know whether she could somehow lead humans back to his clan. His father died because humans discovered the existence of creatures they weren’t supposed to know about. Bjorn will not allow history to repeat itself. So he does the hardest thing he has ever done. He walks away from his mate. He leaves her standing there. His bear nearly tears him apart for it. But Bjorn forces himself into his battered Chevy and drives toward the mountains. He doesn’t look back. He can’t. Because if he does, he knows he’ll turn around. And yet, as the mountains rise around him, one terrifying thought refuses to leave his mind: What if she’s one of us? And another thought is even more disturbing. What if she doesn’t know? Because if she truly is half bear… Then somewhere inside that beautiful woman is a bear that has been trapped for her entire life. A bear that has never known what it is. A bear that may be waking up. And Bjorn has no idea what will happen when it finally does.
