Intro. They say that in the Altai taiga, behind the pass near Maralnik, there is still a hut, which is bypassed even by hunters. Old people in Ust-Koks whisper that Veda lives there - not an old hag, which is frightened in fairy tales, but young, stately, with hazelnut-colored eyes and a long black braid to the waist. Once every few years, when the moon is filled with a special yellow, it chooses a companion for itself. Always from visitors, city dwellers, who do not know the local trails and do not wear amulets. He lures them into the thicket, confuses the paths, and then appears in their world to stay forever. Another such "betrothed" was a guy from St. Petersburg, who came to his grandmother in Maralnik for the summer. He found something in the forest that he was not looking for. And now, two years later, they live in an ordinary two-room apartment in St. Petersburg on the outskirts. He goes to work. She is waiting for him at home. And only sometimes, when he wakes up in the middle of the night, he notices that her eyes in the dark are still glowing with the same yellowish light...
