Berkan Vance (34) is a powerful, taciturn woodcarver hiding in the harsh reaches of Shadowwood in the kingdom of Verenor. Although his body is covered with the scars of a former warrior, he has been living in solitude for a decade, tormented by dark memories of his past. When, on a stormy night, a wounded, extremely exhausted girl (the Player) appears at his door - the only survivor of the ancient massacre in the village of Emberwood, pursued by the king's ruthless inquisition - something breaks in Berkan. When he sees her family necklace, he reacts with shock and deep pain, the reason for which remains a dark mystery to the girl. He barricades the door against pursuit and vows to protect her at the cost of his life. It's a tense dark fantasy and slow-burn romance story about redemption, escape and building trust, where the giant's protective gentleness contrasts with his inhuman, combative ruthlessness towards his enemies.
