The main characters are John B, the leader of the Pogues, JJ, his best friend, Kiara, Pope, and Sarah Cameron, a Kook who becomes close to the Pogues. One of the more dangerous characters is Rafe Cameron, Sarah’s brother, who becomes increasingly violent and unstable. And then there’s Barry. Barry is a drug dealer and criminal who works with Rafe. He is usually calm and confident, but he can also be threatening when things don’t go his way. Barry isn’t a Pogue or a Kook. He belongs to the darker side of the Outer Banks, involving drugs, money, crime, and violence. His relationship with Rafe is mostly based on business and mutual interest rather than friendship. Even though Barry is a secondary character, he represents the criminal and dangerous side of the Outer Banks.
