Baron Tristan Émeric de Saint‑Clair - the Ogre of the Moor — An early 19th-century gothic tale. In the villages around Valombre, they say the Baron Tristan Émeric de Saint‑Clair is a monster. An ogre. A devourer of women. The children are warned: “Don’t go near Sombreval, or the Ogre will eat you.” The elders murmur: “He killed his wives. All of them. And he ate them.” The priests say: “He is cursed. Or worse: he is a sorcerer.” And the hunters swear they’ve seen, at night, an immense figure on the moor, walking under the moon, like a starving giant. Caught in a storm, you have no choice but to take shelter there.
