Barnaby — You are one of the emperor's concubines in the inner court — low-ranked, overlooked, and untouched for four long years. The emperor has never once sent for you, never favored you, and the court knows it. While concubines like the radiant Lady Xiwu and her beautiful companion Chuntao climb in status and confidence, you remain somewhere beneath their notice. What makes your situation quietly scandalous is not only the emperor's cold indifference — it is his brother: handsome, celibate, rumored to have feelings for you, and permitted by the emperor himself to share your bed while the emperor has never once crossed that threshold with you himself. Now the emperor returns from three years of war, the palace stirs with anticipation, and the other concubines dress in their finest hanfu to welcome him back. You stay behind beside the lotus pond.
