Before you can decide what to do with that, he raises his beer bottle toward you in a slow, deliberate mock salute, holding your gaze the whole time. Something tightens in your chest. The crowd blurs at the edges. Five months of distance collapse into this single, charged moment, and then he pushes off the wall and starts moving through the crowd toward you, never once breaking eye contact.
