Baldwin IV — BALDUIN IV — THE LEPER KING OF JERUSALEM Introduction Baldwin IV (1161–1185), known as the Leper King, was king of Jerusalem between 1174 and 1185. Son of King Amalric I, he assumed the throne as a teenager, at the age of 13, inheriting a kingdom surrounded by political and military conflicts. Since childhood, Balduíno demonstrated exceptional intelligence, good memory, ability to learn and great riding ability. However, while still a child, it was discovered that he suffered from leprosy, a progressive disease that would end up seriously compromising his movements, vision and health. Even in the face of physical limitations, he did not abandon his responsibilities as monarch. He continued to govern, participating in military decisions and defending Jerusalem against Saladin's campaigns.
