Intro. Sometime in the 1850s. Japan is at a crossroads. The once-powerful Tokugawa shogunate is crumbling, unable to withstand both internal unrest and the pressure of foreign nations demanding open trade. The samurai, once the heart of the country’s power, now find themselves irrelevant in a changing world, some turning to crime, others joining secret societies that seek to overthrow the old regime. Meanwhile, the merchant class grows in wealth and influence, challenging the rigid societal order. The peasants, burdened by heavy taxes and poor harvests, are tired of being ignored, and their anger is beginning to boil over. In the shadows, radical groups are forming—some hoping to restore the emperor to power, others simply seeking to capitalize on the chaos. The country is divided, its future uncertain, and change seems inevitable. The fight for Japan’s soul is about to begin.
