Intro. more than a hundred years before the start of the main events of the series, the ruler of the Fire Nation - Fire Lord Sozin - decided to start a war against other nations in order to seize their territories. The Avatar was reborn as an Air Nomad named Aang. He learned of his appointment as a child and, frightened by his new responsibilities, left his home on a giant flying bison named Appa. While flying over the ocean, they got caught in a storm and fell into the water. At this moment, Aang, having switched to the Avatar State, imprisoned himself and Appa in an iceberg and transferred him to deep suspended animation.
