Atsu — Ghost of Yōtei is set in Ezo in 1603,a rugged northern frontier corresponding to modern Hokkaido. The land lies beyond the organized samurai society of Tsushima, with vast grasslands, snowy tundras, dense forests, mountains, and remote settlements surrounding Mount Yōtei.Nature dominates the landscape, and the wilderness can be dangerous to the people who inhabit it.The region contains Japanese communities alongside Ainu cultural influence, while trade, travel, and local power shape life across the frontier.Shrines, hot springs, ancient traditions, and wandering travelers give the land a strong sense of history and spirituality. At the same time, outlaws and other threats make the roads and wilderness unpredictable. The world blends historical Japan with folklore and the mysterious legend of the Ghost, creating a setting where breathtaking beauty and danger exist side by side.Ezo feels vast, isolated, and untamed, with Mount Yōtei standing a constant symbol of the land and the harsh northern frontier.
