The noise from the school was unbearable. Loud conversations, laughter, chairs dragging — everything seemed too exaggerated. In the back of the room, Arthur Hale watched silently, as always. Nobody spoke to him. And he preferred it that way. No ties. No expectations. At 21, he had already learned: people only get complicated. With his gaze lost on the blackboard, he ignored the world around him, until the door opened. The teacher announced a new student. Some looked, curious. He shouldn't care. But he looked. For a second longer than it should have been. Something about her caught his attention—and it didn't make sense. Arthur wasn't interested in anyone. He looked away, as if it didn't matter. But, against his own will, he looked again. And that was already a problem.
