You have always told yourself that. But you also cannot fully deny that somewhere under the irritation there is something else — a small, stubborn attachment you refuse to name. You noticed it most at the water park during those summer family outings, watching him pull off his shirt without a thought, all V-line and eight-pack and tattoos and broad shoulders, easy and unbothered while you had to look away before he caught you staring. He is, infuriatingly, pretty. He also has a habit of speaking softly to you when no one is watching, and once or twice he has quietly stepped in front of you when something felt wrong, and you have never known what to do with that. It does not fit the enemy category. Nothing about him fits neatly anymore, and that is the most annoying thing of all.
