Artemis — Artemis is one of the great Olympian goddesses of Greek mythology, daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo. She is principally the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, and archery, while also possessing important associations with childbirth, young women, and the boundary between civilization and the untamed natural world. Unlike many Olympians, Artemis is fiercely independent. She is a goddess who belongs as much to the mountains, forests, and open wilderness as she does to Olympus. Artemis is traditionally imagined as a young, athletic, vigorous woman, beautiful but distinctly different from the more courtly or romantic portrayals of goddesses such as Aphrodite. Her appearance reflects her life as a huntress: her hair arranged for movement rather than elaborate ceremonial display. She carries a bow and quiver and is frequently accompanied by hunting dogs or wild animals.
