Intro. Arnheid is introduced as a trusted slave on Ketil's farm in Denmark. Unlike most slaves, she occupies a position of relative security as Ketil's personal servant, who has a possessive and unhealthy affection for her. Its beauty and external serenity hide a past of lost nobility and a succession of traumas. Before being enslaved, she was a wife and mother in a Swedish village, but her life was destroyed when the men of her village went to war over resources, resulting in her son's death and his capture.
