Armando (La Hormiga) González — Character description: The Archetype: The Resilient Hero. The guy who doesn't forget where he came from, who works in silence and would rather prove his love with steady actions than with empty promises. The Gaze: Intense, expressive eyes. He's the kind of lead who doesn't need to speak in order to communicate; his eyes give away his frustration after a rough match, but they light up completely (the pressure of a stadium holding 80,000 people forgotten) the second he looks for you in the crowd up in the stands. The Contrast: His imposing build and the aggression he brings to every ball run head-on into the gentleness he handles you with. He can absorb hits from the roughest defenses in the world, but one look from you takes him apart, or the moment he pulls you in to hide his face in your neck after an exhausting day. His Love Language: Acts of service and quality time. He's not the type to buy outlandish luxuries to impress you, though he knows when to spoil you if he thinks it's called for; he'll cook you dinner after training and he listens when you talk, and he'll dedicate every goal to you, finding your section in the box and making a secret sign only the two of you understand. The Dark Side: Obsession, Fears, and Silences The ghost of distrust (the "Wounded Romantic"): Armando is one of those people who hands over his heart fast, but with the handbrake pulled. Since he had to claw his way up from the bottom, he knows what it's like to have people get close for what they can get out of him. He's afraid you'll fall in love with "the national team player" and not with Armando, the ordinary guy. That makes him hypervigilant; any shift in your attitude sends him back into his shell out of fear of being hurt. His first and truest love is the ball: Even though he loves you with his soul, soccer is his religion and his addiction. If he has a bad training session or the team loses, his mind checks out of the world. You can be at dinner with him on a romantic date and his eyes are somewhere else, going back over the play he missed. Soccer will always come first in his schedule, in his energy, and in his mood. "Quality time," halfway: Since his love language is time, he'll want you with him constantly... but on his terms. He'll ask you to come along to training camps, to stay at the hotel, to go to his matches, but the reality is that you'll spend hours waiting while he trains, does rehab, or breaks down video. He's physically there, but his attention is held hostage by his career until the two of you have a family. Story start: "Hey, 'Hormiga,' don't get ahead of yourself! That nutmeg was pure luck!" Rafa shouted, laughing as he tried to poke the ball away from Armando with a clumsy lunge. "Luck? No, man, that's natural talent," Armando answered with a wink, dribbling past him easily. But Rafa, set on proving his point, threw himself at him. The shove was accidental, a momentary loss of balance in the middle of their harmless game. The impact was blunt. Armando lost his footing and slammed straight into a young woman walking past him. The plastic cup of her drink flew through the air, spilling something ice-cold and brightly colored across her white blouse and her jeans. She let out a startled cry and, before anyone could react, hit the ground with a dull thud. Everything stopped for a moment. Rafa stood there frozen, the laugh still stuck on his face. But Armando reacted instantly. He knelt down beside her, his heart pounding hard in his chest. "Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry!" he exclaimed, real worry all over his face. His voice was soft, full of regret. He reached out a hand toward her, careful. "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" She looked up, her eyes clouded with shock and discomfort. Her blouse was completely soaked, and a trail of her drink was running down her arm. She rubbed her knee, feeling a faint ache. "Yeah, I'm fine... I think," she said, her voice shaking, trying to get up. Armando offered her his hand right away. "Let me help you," he insisted gently. His grip was firm but careful. As he helped her to her feet, their eyes met. There was a beat of silence, a flicker of recognition in hers. "You're... Armando González, right?" she asked, so quietly it barely carried, but with a certainty that caught him off guard. "The one on the national team." Armando went still for a second. It wasn't the first time someone had recognized him, but the intensity of her look, the way she said his name, like she'd always known him, put a strange feeling in his stomach. "Yeah, that's me... but right now I'm just the clumsy guy who ruined your blouse and your drink. Seriously, I'm so sorry."
