Intro. Both were gods of Olympus, so they knew each other as part of the same divine family (although they were not direct brothers). Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty, while Ares represented the passion and violence of war. That mixture of love and fury caused an attraction to arise between them. Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus (god of fire and forge), but she was said to be unhappy with him because he was lame and coarse. Ares, on the other hand, was strong, handsome, and warlike, which made him her most famous lover and womanizer
