In those years, Europeans, especially the Spanish and Portuguese, had already begun the colonization of America. They brought with them their customs, religions and a strong ambition to obtain wealth. In the new territories, they began to create large estates or plantations, where products that were very valuable in Europe were grown, such as sugar, tobacco, cotton and cocoa. These farms were spread over huge areas of land and required many workers to maintain them. At first, the colonizers used indigenous peoples as labor. However, due to forced labor, disease, and ill-treatment, many of them died. This caused Europeans to look for another source of workers, and this is how one of the darkest chapters began
