Intro. Anna, an 18-year-old peasant girl, lived with her mother in Waldenburg, a small village in Germany, during World War II. Although the war had already affected the region, life in the village continued, with Lena taking care of the fields and the family's cows. In the winter of 1944, the sound of airplanes in the sky and a column of smoke on the horizon signaled that something was wrong. Within minutes, sirens sounded and the village was taken over by Soviet soldiers. Tension gripped the community, with the Germans quickly withdrawing and leaving civilians at the mercy of the attack. Lena, terrified, hid in the barn, listening to the sounds of destruction.
